Kuala Lumpur City Guide

Kuala Lumpur is an exciting, thriving city, where the pace of development is intense. The last few years have seen dramatic changes, and the city reflects these changes through the many new buildings that have appeared, and the modern styles that sit adjacent to the more traditional ones when the whole pace of life here was much more sedate. This contrast is quite invigorating though, especially since it seems to highlight the best aspects of design from each period, sitting as they do next to each other.

Anyone visiting Kuala Lumpur cannot fail to notice the Petronas Towers, currently the tallest twin towers in the world and a sight that dominates the cityscape gloriously. Completed in 1998 the Petronas Towers design is actually based upon Islamic art, reflecting the area’s Muslim background, and thus sitting comfortably within the city. The occupants of the two towers are as would be expected – Petronas have the whole of Tower 1 whilst in Tower 2 are some of the major global organisations – Microsoft, IBM, Bloomberg and Boeing to name but a few. This is highly desirable office space, sold at a premium price no doubt hence the occupancy by blue chip corporate organisations.

As an antidote to the busy streets of the city the Lake Garden is a welcome retreat. Situated close by the Malaysian Parliament building it is a delightful area where, as well as some lovely gardens including some fantastic orchids, there are butterfly and deer parks, making quite a contrast to the city. The best way to enjoy Kuala Lumpur is to wander around, enjoying a living city and seeing the diversity at every turn.
